After careful consideration the Government announced in the 2014 Federal Budget that PGPPP will cease on 31 December 2014.
The PGPPP was introduced at a time when there was not enough demand for GP training places, and attracting hospital doctors into a career in general practice was necessary, but that is no longer the case.
Demand for places on the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program has exceeded supply for a number of years. The PGPPP funding will be redirected to significantly expand AGPT program training places from 1 January 2015. AGPT training places will increase from 1,200 to 1,500 new places per year by 2015.
The PGPPP will continue to the end of 2014 and be managed under the current arrangements with General Practice Education and Training Limited (GPET) and the Regional Training Providers.
